3.10.10-Longboarding

My average day usually consists of at least four really notable thoughts. That's not a lot, considering how much time there is to think!

So, Ian Jackson, Libby's cousin and budding designer extraordinaire, was in town this past week learning the ropes of new york city design. on saturday, we spent the day seeing sites. one of the things that has been on both of our minds is that it's hard to capture really meaningful moments/images. this is something i'm going to focus more on. i guess the theme that i have been trying to promote in this blog has been 'nature and man'--finding natural beauty in this city.

i was introduced to this idea a while back when i learned about how europeans approach 'nature photography'. in US nature photography, we appreciate and call an image beautiful if it captures something spectacular and 'untouched' by man. europeans, on the other hand, don't necessarily bother about the 'untouched' part. that got me thinking, and it has really expanded my vision for photography. i think i used to be a nature snob, only appreciating the extraordinary. that's pretty shallow, i know. i've been noticing the details, lately--seeing light, patterns, and problems/ironies around me. while that doesn't always translate to anything, at least i am appreciating life for what it is, not only for what it could be (idyllic landscape).

anyways, so i have that thoughtful project going, but i am still struggling to capture something deep, and important. i think it takes more time planning, asking a question, and then finding an answer to it.

So this picture isn't good. i brought my camera with me longboarding last night. it was my first time actually longboarding for real (besides just taking lib's board around the neighborhood), and the guys i was with were really good. i had a great vision for a shot, and tried to take it, but later realized it didn't record. anyways, it's probably good i put the camera away, because i fell like five minutes later!

the picture has some great elements in it, although it stinks overall. hopefully i can incorporate them into something great this weekend.
