Week 1: Chinatown

In the first week of "Hood Hopping" (still looking for a name), I started around 5:15 p.m. on 3rd Ave and 42nd. After taking a few shots around 34th, I took a train to Canal Street - Chinatown where I met up with a friend (his pix forthcoming, I hope). After a couple hours in Chinatown we made our way east and then north, walking through parts of the Lower East Side until we reached Houston.

Chinatown was definitely more challenging to shoot than I anticipated. Maybe it's the sensory overload or the billions of people around, but whatever it was, it took us awhile to really get a feel for how to take interesting photos. In the end, here were a few of my favorites from Chinatown.

Canal Street (below): walk around long enough on Canal, and you'll start to tune in to how many men and women are quietly whispering in your ear "Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada" - if you're looking for one of these for a fraction of the price, these people are your best bet.

Very typical of Chinatown:

The shot below is probably my favorite of the shoot - the Chinatown fishmonger:

Still to come from week one: Midtown and LES.

  1. How do they do it? You know, the street vendors? Seems like everything we know about economies of scale would say that they shouldn't be able to make it. Is Albertsons afraid of the traffic? Or, is an Albertsons sister company wholesaling for these street vendors? Mark, go back and ask them where they get their veggies.
